The Government of Peru has issued this Sunday the decree that extends the state of emergency in the departments of Cusco, Lima and Puno, the province of Callao and other regions due to the increase in protests that are sweeping the entire country against the government of President Dina Boluarte. The measure enters into force as of today, January 15, and will last for the next 30 days.

The decree details that during that period “The constitutional rights related to the inviolability of the home, freedom of transit through the national territory, freedom of assembly, and personal freedom and security are suspended.”

In addition to the aforementioned regions, a state of emergency has also been declared in the province of Andahuaylas in the department of Apurímac, in the provinces of Tambopata and Tahuamanu in the department of Madre de Dios, and in the district of Torata, province of Mariscal Nieto in the Moquegua department. Likewise, it has included five national highways: the Panamericana Sur, the Panamericana Norte, Central, the South Apurímac-Cuzco-Arequipa Road Corridor and the South Interoceanic Road Corridor.

On the other hand, the norm has extended the curfew in the department of Puno for ten days —from 20:00 to 04:00 (local time)—.

Since the protests began last December, 329 citizens have been detained in the framework of anti-government demonstrations, 42 people have died -41 civilians and a police officer- and 531 have been injured -355 civilians and 176 police officers-.
