Russia removed commander in charge of Ukraine offensive and replaced him with another

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a change in his offensive in Ukraine. The change of the Chief of the Army General Staff was announced and will now be in charge of Valeri Guerasimov.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense indicated that Gerasimov, currently chief of the Russian General Staff, was appointed “commander of the combined group of troops” deployed in Ukraine, replacing Sergei Surovikin, who had agreed to that position in November.

“The increase in the command level of the special operation (in Ukraine) is linked to an expansion of the scale of the missions to be carried out and the need for closer interaction between the components of the armed forces,” the ministry explained.

He also specified that Gerasimov will have Generals Sergei Surovikin, Oleg Saliukov and Alexei Kim as deputies.

Sergei Surovikin had been appointed commander of the troops in Ukraine in October to correct the situation of the Russian army, which was suffering setbacks from the Ukrainian offensives in the Kharkiv (northeast) and Kherson (south) regions.

Over the months, the Russian army has suffered several losses in combat, such as at Kherson. (YO)
