Biden Supports Compensating Migrant Families Separated by Trump Policy

President U.S, Joe Biden, said this Saturday that it agrees to grant financial compensation to the families of migrants who “lost” their children due to the “zero tolerance” policy with migration applied by their predecessor, Donald Trump.

“If because of the aberrational policy of the previous government, when you crossed the border, legally or illegally, and you lost your son, who disappeared, you deserve some form of compensation, regardless of the circumstances,” Biden said at a conference. press release after the approval of its comprehensive infrastructure investment plan.

“What form it will take, I have no idea,” he added.

The Wall Street Journal reported in early October that the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security were in the process of negotiating with migrant families who filed lawsuits for financial settlements of up to $ 450,000 per person.

Biden, who this week called those claims “garbage,” denied the amounts.

“The figures released by the media are higher than those that can be reached by any agreement,” a White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, had said Thursday.

The Democratic president promised during his campaign a more “humane” immigration policy after the Trump era.

The “zero tolerance” policy consisted of initiating criminal proceedings against any person who entered the border illegally with Mexico. And as a consequence, parents were placed in detention centers without their children and some families were never reunited.

A total of almost 4,000 migrant children were separated from their families. More than 2,000 had not yet been reunited with their relatives at the beginning of June 2021.
