The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office announced the opening of an investigation against several Peruvian authorities in the face of the demonstrations that have taken place in the country and that have left at least 40 dead in a month.
“The Prosecutor of the Nation arranged to initiate a preliminary investigation against President Dina Boluarte; President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola; Minister of the Interior, Víctor Rojas; Minister of Defense, Jorge Chávez,” the prosecutor’s office said on Twitter.
The investigation is for alleged crimes of “genocide, qualified homicide and serious injuries” during the anti-government demonstrations in the Apurímac, La Libertad, Puno, Junín, Arequipa and Ayacucho regions.
They impose a curfew in Puno, a region of Peru with violent protests that left 18 dead
The investigation also includes the former chief of staff Pedro Ángulo, and the former Minister of the Interior, César Cervantes, who were part of the Boluarte government between December 7 and 21, 2022. During that period there were 22 deaths due to the repression of the forces of the order by police and military.
The protests are concentrated in the Andean areas of Peru, where the population is demanding the resignation of Boluarte and immediate presidential and legislative elections.
Last Monday, the death of 18 people was recorded in Juliaca when protesters sought to break into the town’s airport.
The deaths have exacerbated outrage in the cities of Puno and Juliaca, some 1,300 km from Lima, whose inhabitants have been on strike for a week and have kept businesses closed.
The Superintendence of Land Transport of People, Cargo and Goods reported blockades and transit interrupted by pickets in six regions: Puno, Cusco, Apurímac, Arequipa, Madre de Dios and Amazonas. (YO)
