A judge of the Supreme Court of New York has condemned this Friday the company of trump organization to pay a million-dollar fine $1.61 million for defrauding taxes for 15 years.
Magistrate Juan Merchan has imposed this sentence after a month ago the organization was found guilty of operating a tax evasion scheme during years.
In early December, a jury found guilty of 17 economic crimes against two companies belonging to to former President Donald Trump’s organization, Trump Corporation and Trump Payroll Corporation, in a case in which he and his relatives were not accused.
This is the maximum penalty that the Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office, headed by prosecutor Alvin Bragg, had recommended for the sentence, who applauded the decision in a statement and considered it “momentous” to set an example for other companies and executives. “While corporations cannot go to jail, this consequential sentence serves as a reminder to corporations and executives that you cannot defraud the tax authorities and get away with it“, reads the note.
Last Tuesday, Judge Merchan already sentenced Allen Weisselberg, who worked for the Trump family for half a century and was the company’s chief financial officer, to five months in prison after testifying as a star witness for the prosecution.
Susan Necheles, one of the defense attorneys, has advanced that Trump’s company plans to appeal, in a case where no one else faces jail time. The District Attorney’s Office, however, will continue its criminal investigation into Trump’s business practices.
