Around 1,200 people were detained by the Brazilian authorities after having raided several official buildings on Sunday to seek the fall of the current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In an unusual joint statement, published on Lula’s Twitter, the heads of the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Supreme Court rejected the “terrorist, vandal, criminal and coup acts” in the capital.

“We call on society to maintain serenity, in defense of peace and democracy,” they said.

Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro invade the Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court of Brazil

On Sunday, for about four hours, supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the offices of the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court. This with the mission of demanding a military intervention that removes Lula from power, despite taking office since January 1.

Flavio Dino, Minister of Justice and Security, reported that most of the detainees were in a camp in Brasilia and that a large part of the protesters had left from there.

Hundreds of police and soldiers were deployed this Monday in different parts of the country, such as Brasilia, Rio and Sao Paulo, to dismantle similar structures, from where a military intervention was demanded two months ago to prevent Lula’s return to power.

An order from a Supreme Court judge detailed the total vacancy of the campsites in 24 hours.

The governor of the Federal District of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, was also removed from office, as well as those arrested for terrorism as well as other crimes.

The nephew of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was one of the protesters who participated this Sunday in the attempt to take over the institutional buildings in Brasilia. Leonardo Rodrigues de Jesus, known as Leo Indio, uploaded several videos and photos to his Instagram profile on Sunday where he is seen throwing stones in the crowd surrounding Congress.

One of the protesters who reportedly identified himself is Bolsonaro’s nephew, who was among the protesters although he denied having been involved in the acts of vandalism as well as the destruction of furniture. (YO)
