WHO issues alert for two cough syrups that can cause “severe harm or death”

The regional office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO) issued that week a health alert for two syrups cough medicines that contain chemicals that can be harmful to patients.

It’s all about the syrups Ambronol and DOK-1 Maxidentified last month in Uzbekistan and manufactured in India by the company Marion Biotechreported WHO-Europe in a statement.

Laboratory analysis conducted in Uzbekistan revealed that both products contain “unacceptable” amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycolsubstances that can cause “severe injury or death”particularly if they are used in children.

Toxic effects may include abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrheaamong others, and in some cases acute renal failure that can lead to the death of the patient, the organization warned.

They may have been sold through “informal markets”

The WHO also warned that these syrups possibly have sales authorizations in other countries in the area and that may have been distributed “through informal markets” to other states or regions.

For this reason, the organization asked the health authorities of the countries that may have been affected to increase surveillance of supply chains and immediately notify the WHO of any findings of products that do not meet the standards.

According to the Uzbek authorities, 18 children have died in the Central Asian Republic after consuming drugs produced by Marion Biotech.
