Inflation in Brazil in 2022 slows down sharply, but does not reach the government’s target

Inflation Brazilian closed 2022 with a sharp slowdown from the double-digit highs recorded during the year, thanks to government measures and an aggressive monetary adjustment, but once again failed to meet the official target set by the Government.

The benchmark IPCA consumer price index rose 5.79% last year, the IBGE statistics agency said on Tuesday, above the 5.60% average expected in a Reuters poll of economists.

The result missed neither the central bank’s annual target of 3.5% nor the top 5% of its tolerance band, marking the second consecutive year of default. By law, the governor of the central bank, Roberto Campos Netoyou will have to publish a letter justifying the reasons.

The index rose 0.62% in December, according to IBGE, above the 0.45% forecast in a Reuters poll, driven mainly by higher prices for health and personal care items.
