Mexico doubles vacation days for workers who complete a year of work

The Mexican Government published on Tuesday the reform to the Federal Labor Law regarding vacations. Mexico was one of the countries that gave fewer vacations to its workers in the region.

Workers could opt for only 6 days of paid rest in their first year, this increased as the years of service passed. However, with the reform this was doubled to a minimum of 12 and will be extended over the years.

In the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the reform was published that provided that “workers who have more than one year of service will enjoy an annual period of paid vacations, which in no case may be less than twelve working days, and that it will increase by two working days, up to twenty, for each subsequent year of service.”

The Latin American countries with more and less vacation days guaranteed by law

After the sixth year, two vacation days will increase for every five days of service. This new provision will enter into force on January 1, 2023.

Mexico was from one of the countries that offered the least vacations to its workers. With this change, Honduras is the one that established the fewest days of vacation for workers in its first year since it establishes only 10, in the case of Paraguay 12 days are granted. (YO)
