The former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced in total to 33 years jail in her long legal battle since she was overthrown by a coup in February 2021 and that this Friday has culminated with a last sentence of seven years from prison.
A military court, located in the Naypyidaw prison where the Nobel Peace Prize laureate is serving her sentence, today issued the latest sentence for five charges related to the rental of land and the purchase and rental of helicopters.
The European Union (EU) has condemned the latest sentence faced by Suu Kyi, considering that she has been tried in a trial without the “necessary guarantees”.
A spokesman for the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has indicated in a statement that a court controlled by the Myanmar (Burma) military has delivered its final verdicts on Friday against the detained president. win myint and State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, thus concluding a series of “purely politically motivated” trials held over the past thirteen months.
“These trials were carried out without respecting due legal process or the necessary judicial guarantees and are a clear attempt to exclude democratically elected leaders from political life,” the spokesman stressed.
Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi face a total of 12 and 33 years in prison respectively, including three years of hard laborwhich represents “another flagrant violation of human rights in Myanmar,” the spokesperson said.
“The European Union strongly condemns these trials, these verdicts and the general dismantling of democracy and the rule of law in Myanmar,” it stressed.
He added that the EU continues to defend an authentic dialogue in the countryinvolving Suu Kyi, the National League for Democracy, the Government of National Unity, civil society and all other relevant stakeholders in Myanmar, with a view to “opening the way out of the deep crisis in the country and restore the path towards democracy”.
The EU has also expressed its deep concern about the large number of people arbitrarily detained and has reiterated its urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.
