Winter storm Elliot has caused about 50 deaths in the United States of America this Christmas. Besides, has left heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds across much of the country. It has been the coldest Christmas Americans have experienced in many years.
The most damaged area has been southwestern New York, about 27 bodies have been found there. These have been found in houses, vehicles and on the street. In Buffalo, despite being used to the cold, they have had to close the airport due to snowfall.
Other states have also fallen victim to Elliot, with several fatalities: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
Around 60% of the population, more than 200 million people, have suffered the consequences of the hurricaneand the New York governor, Kathy Hochul, has said that it has been the “most devastating” hurricane that she remembers and has asked the public not to use the roads.
Some states have had record numbers for temperature drops; New York has dropped to 10.5 °C below zero, a temperature that it has not suffered since 1872.
