In Brazil, a police operation is deployed against Bolsonaristas for coup protests

The Federal Police of Brazil deployed this thursday a large operation against supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro linked to the demonstrations demanding a coup against the elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, official sources reported.

The agents comply 81 search warrantsissued by the Supreme Court, in the framework of an investigation into the blockades of truckers on various highways in the country that took place the days following the second round of the presidential elections on October 30.

The Federal Police reported in a brief note that registrations are being carried out in 8 of the 27 Brazilian states: Acre, Amazonas, Rondonia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina and the Federal District of Brasilia.

In the Brazilian capital, a group of radical Bolsonaristas staged serious riots on Monday night, when they set fire to a dozen vehicles, destroyed street furniture and tried to force their way into a police headquarters.

This Thursday’s action aims to “individuals and legal entities identified by federal and local Public Security forces”added the information without offering further details.

In those roadblocks, which were dissolved by force after a few days, the truckers were unaware of Lula’s electoral victory and asked the Armed Forces for a military “intervention” against the elected ruler who would keep Bolsonaro in power.

In this case, the actions of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) are also being investigated for their alleged “omission” when acting to clear the roads and arrest suspects.

Since the elections, which Lula beat Bolsonaro by a difference of less than two points, followers of the far-right leader have also demonstrated and camped at the gates of the barracks in several cities in the country to demand a coup d’état that prevents the investiture of the elected ruler.

They have also gathered at the Palacio de la Alvorada, the official residence of the Presidency, to convey their proclamations to Bolsonaro, who continues without congratulating Lula, nor openly acknowledging his electoral defeat, although he did authorize starting the transition process.

The far-right president, who will leave power on January 1, when Lula will be sworn in, has drastically reduced his public agenda since he lost his re-election bid.

Last Friday, Bolsonaro broke a silence of more than a month by addressing his followers at the Palacio de la Alvorada to praise the role of the Armed Forces, “the last obstacle of socialism”, as he said, to praise God and ask for the union of its social base against the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT).
