The special committee of the House of Representatives that investigates the storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021 unanimously approved this Monday to request the imputation of former President Donald Trump for three crimes: inciting or aiding an insurrection, obstruction of an official procedure of Congress, conspiracy to deceive the State and conspiracy to give false testimony.

The commission has voted in a final public session on bringing criminal charges based on a lengthy investigation. However, the final report of the commission will not be published until on Wednesday next.

The commission is made up of eight members of the House of Representatives — six of them Democrats — and investigates the assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters during the protocol confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 elections.

The request will now be moved to the Justice Department, which is also investigating Trump in parallel for his involvement in these incidents, which resulted in the death of five people. Four more committed suicide after the events.

The approval of this recommendation does not have specific legal effectsbut it represents a historical milestone because it is the first time that Congress has requested to impute a former president.
