Thirteen dead and six missing in landslide in border town next to Ecuador

Eight injured people were discharged and two more were referred to health centers in Pasto, the departmental capital.

A landslide of great proportions registered at dawn on Tuesday, November 2 in the San Miguel community, in the border municipality of Mallamas (Colombia), located 76 km from the Rumichaca international bridge, leaves thirteen dead and six missing.

The landslide covered homes where most of the victims were staying overnight, which were buried by immense volumes of earth, stones, mud, trees and water.

The event blocked the road and blocked the way to the coastal sector of the border department (province) of Nariño, in front of Ecuador.

John Rojas, the highest authority in this Colombian province, described the incident as a tragedy.

“It has been a very painful day for Nariño, this tragedy deeply saddens me. All our solidarity with the families of the victims and people affected by the landslide that occurred at dawn this Tuesday in the municipality of Mallamas, ”said Rojas.

Lenin Tara later, commander of the Mallamas Fire Brigade, reported that after 24 hours of searching, thirteen lifeless bodies have been found and six people are still missing.
