The video generated discomfort in Paraguay to the point that the Chamber of Deputies in Asunción declared him “persona no grata.”
The Bolivian government dismissed its brand-new ambassador in Paraguay, Mario Cronembold, after he released a video on the social network Tik Tok in which he alludes to the consumption of the tereré infusion and which caused discomfort in Paraguayan lands, reported this Wednesday the chancellery.
The Bolivian Foreign Ministry summoned the diplomat to explain the incident and said in a statement that “after receiving the report and evaluating the circumstances, Ambassador Cronembold was dismissed from his duties on November 1, 2021.”
In the video, Cronembold imitates the Paraguayan accent after consuming tereré, an infusion based on yerba mate and that is traditional in Paraguay.
The video generated discomfort in Paraguay to the point that the Chamber of Deputies in Asunción declared him “persona no grata.”
The Bolivian Foreign Ministry stated that “the incident that occurred does not affect diplomatic relations between the Plurinational State of Bolivia and the Republic of Paraguay, which are currently at their highest level.”
Cronembold, a 47-year-old member of the ruling Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS), published his video at the end of September and withdrew it shortly after, after the first critical reactions.
He then apologized: “I apologize to those who were offended by my recent Tik Tok. I unequivocally wanted to refer to the warm welcome I received and how happy I feel in this beautiful land, “he said at the end of last month.
Cronembold received the position at the Bolivian Foreign Ministry in La Paz on September 28.
