US sanctions companies from Israel, Russia and Singapore for cyber espionage

Washington clarified that the decision is directed to the designated companies, and not to the countries or governments where they are located.

The Commerce Department added four companies from Israel, Russia and China to its “black list” for activities related to cyber espionage and contrary to “national security interests” of the United States.

Those sanctioned are the Israeli companies NSO and Candiru, the Russian Positive Technologies and the Singaporean Computer Security Initiative Consultancy PTE.

The US Commerce Department statement stressed that Israeli companies “developed and supplied cyber espionage programs to foreign governments” that “used these tools to attack officials, journalists, businessmen, activists, academics and journalists.”

The Russian and Singaporean companies were designated, for their part, for trafficking with instruments that allow “unauthorized access to computer systems, threatening the privacy and security of individuals and organizations around the world.”

The move, he added, is part of the “efforts” by the administration of President Joe Biden to “put human rights at the center of US foreign policy, including work to curb the proliferation of digital tools for repression. ”.

Washington clarified that the decision is directed to the designated companies, and not to the countries or governments where they are located.

As a result, all exports to these four companies of any type of technology from the US are prohibited.

NSO is responsible for the development of the electronic spyware Pegasus, which in July an international journalistic investigation revealed that it had been to spy on hundreds of journalists and political leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron. (I)
