Gas price limit. No deal in the EU. Moscow: We’ve seen each other many times. We all have deja vu

During Tuesday’s meeting of the energy ministers of the member states, the two camps failed to reconcile. On the one hand, there was a group of 15 countries – including Poland – demanding ceilings below the market price for gas and a quick mechanism for imposing limits, and on the other, e.g. Germany and the Netherlands, which did not want any ceilings, and if they wanted to agree, then for higher than, for example, Poland was ready to accept. These countries were also supported by France.

Earlier, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjártó, also spoke about the reluctance to set a price ceiling. As he added, this is “a bad idea, especially for Hungary.”

– Because, without taking into account our special situation due to the geographical location, it can easily jeopardize the security of energy supply to our country – he said.

Moscow: We are satisfied with the gas price cap of EUR 160 per mWh

– Saga about the maximum price for gas – the next episode. We’ve seen each other many times. We all have déjà vu. And today’s Council was also a kind of déjà vu – said Minister Anna Moscow after the meeting.

– EUR 160 per megawatt hour is a satisfactory price cap for gas for Poland – said the Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moscow in Brussels. She added that most countries are in favor of such a ceiling.

– We all know which economy can afford to buy expensive gas. We are waiting for our neighbors to think about the matter – said Anna Moscow, adding that the energy ministers of the EU countries will meet again on Monday to finally set gas price limits.

Poland – as the head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment emphasized – has one more postulate. He wants gas price caps to cover all gas markets, not just the Dutch exchange.

– We do not want any irregularities, we do not want gas to move from market to market. One, uniform mechanism for all markets is something that would satisfy us and would certainly be a huge relief for large contracts, for industrial contracts and, above all, for large companies, added Minister Moscow.

Recall that the European Commission proposed a possible solution to the maximum price of Russian gas at the end of November. According to EU announcements, the gas price limit would be set at EUR 275 per mWh. The mechanism would be launched when futures contracts on the Dutch TTF exchange will exceed this level for two weeks.
