The American linguist, intellectual and activist Noam Chomsky considers the Russian invasion of Ukraine “a war crime at the same level” as that of Adolf Hitler in Poland or that of the United States (USA) in Iraq.

Chomsky (Philadelphia, 1928) has participated this Sunday by videoconference in the closing gala of the Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival.

The 94-year-old intellectual has located the origin of the current war in Ukraine in the agreement reached in 1990, during the collapse of the former Soviet Union, by the former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev and the american George Bush to accept the entry of the reunified Germany into NATO on the condition that it did not expand further east.

Decision that the later US president Bill Clinton did not respect, stressed Chomsky, who has described Ukraine as “a ‘de facto’ partner of NATO”and has pointed out that “we must seek agreements of any kind to try to prevent the escalation of the conflict”.

Chomsky has also made reference to the situation of Julian Assangedetained in a British prison awaiting a decision on his extradition to the United States, and recalled that there is little awareness about his case, so much activism is needed to achieve greater dissemination.

Regarding the climate crisis, he warned that we have a few decades to avoid collapse and not reach “an irreversible point”and has also urged activism to focus on “unveiling the nature of climate threats” and, to the great powers, to work together to find a solution.
