The new Peruvian president Dina Boluarte calls for unity and dialogue after the arrest of Castillo


The lawyer and politician with a leftist tradition, who will rule until 2026, has been recognized by the Organization of American States as well as the US. Meanwhile, former president Pedro Castillo has been transferred to the prison where former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori is being held.

The new president of Peru, Dina Boluartehas called on unity and dialogue to all political forces and has promised to fight “for the nobodies and the excluded”, after the dismissal and arrest of his predecessor, Pedro Castillo, whom he once again accused of carrying out a coup d’état.

“I assume the position of constitutional president of the Republic being aware of the enormous responsibility that falls to me and my first invocation, how could it be otherwise, is to summon the broadest unity of all Peruvians”, said Boluarte in front of the plenary session of Congress when requesting a political truce to install a Government of national unity.

“As we all know, there has been an attempted coup, an imprint promoted by Mr. Pedro Castillo (…) This Congress of the Republic, in response to the constitutional mandate, has made a decision and it is my duty to act accordingly” , has indicated.

Boluarte, the first female president of Peru, will lead the government until July 28, 2026when Castillo’s term ended.

The Organization of American States (OAS) has recognized Boluarte as the new president. The organization’s secretary general, Luis Almagro, has applauded Boluarte’s call for “national unity”, to which he has offered the bloc’s support for the sake of “the urgent need to rebuild the democratic path.” Also the government of USA through the mouth of a State Department spokesman, he said that the government “celebrates” the appointment of Boluarte as president and wants to start working with her and her administration.

Castle transferred to prison

Meanwhile, the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office (general) has begun an investigation to gather evidence against Castillo, whom it accuses of rebellion and conspiracy.

Castillo has been transferred tonight to the prison from Barbadillo, in Ate, where he will remain for 48 hours and where former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori is also being held.
