Russia rejects Joe Biden’s criticism of his scant presence at COP26 summit

Biden assured that the fact that “China, Russia and Saudi Arabia have not appeared was a problem”.

The Kremlin on Wednesday rejected the criticism of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, on the scant participation of Russia in the conference on the climate of the UN (COP26) that began the weekend in Glasgow (United Kingdom).

“Russia’s actions on climate are not aimed at a specific event. Of course, we do not underestimate the significance of the event in Glasgow, but Russia’s actions on climate are consistent and very important,” said Presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov, during his daily telephone press conference.

Peskov thus responded to a statement by Biden, who lamented the absence of the leaders of Russia and China at the COP26 leaders’ summit.

Biden assured that the fact that “China, Russia and Saudi Arabia have not appeared was a problem”.

“We have come and we have had a profound impact on the way the rest of the world views the United States in its leadership role,” he said in Glasgow.

The Kremlin spokesman insisted that Russia remains faithful to its environmental commitments, but, like other countries in the world, faces problems related to climate change.

“Let’s not forget that forests also burn in California, in Turkey and elsewhere,” said Peskov, alluding to Biden’s phrase in which he drew attention to the fires in Siberia and the Russian Far East.

As part of its commitments, Russia is taking steps to diversify its energy balance, Peskov said.

“Our energy balance is much greener than that of many countries,” he said.

It was previously announced that Russia will invest between 1.5% and 2% of its GDP in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 compared to 1990 levels.

The implementation of this plan will allow Russia to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, according to a strategy developed by the Russian government.

Among the decarbonisation measures envisaged by the Russian Government are measures to support the introduction and implementation of low-carbon or carbon-free technologies, the stimulation of secondary energy sources or changes in fiscal, customs and budgetary policies.

They also include the development of green finance, initiatives to preserve and increase the absorptive capacity of forests and other ecosystems, and support for technologies to capture greenhouse gas emissions.

Russia, one of the main emitters of CO2 into the atmosphere, participates in the Glasgow summit with a delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and Economy Minister Maxim Reshetnikov. (I)
