At least seven dead in a new shooting in a supermarket in the United States

At least seven people have been killed in a shooting that occurred at a Walmart supermarket in the town of Chesapeake, in the US state of Virginia, the town council reported on its Twitter account.

Among the deceased is the perpetrator of the shooting, according to the city council, which cites the Chesapeake police as a source, who has not confirmed if there are any injuries.

The shooter is believed to be the store manager who opened fire on other employees while they were in a break area, then shot himself, CNN reported.

As Chesapeake police spokesman Leo Kosinski explained to the television network, the event occurred after 10 p.m., when the establishment was still open to the public, and the police were alerted to the events at 10 p.m.: 12 local time (03:12 GMT on Wednesday).

A forty of emergency vehicles traveled to the place, where a huge police operation was also deployed.

The Walmart supermarket chain said it was “shocked by this tragic event” and was “working closely with law enforcement.”

The city council has announced that a press conference will be held to report on the event at 08:00 local time.

Chesapeake, in southeastern Virginia, is a city of about 250,000 people and is part of the Virginia Beach and Norfolk metropolitan area.

The event occurs just four days after five other people died in an attack against an LGTB club in Colorado, in which 25 people were also injured.

That other shooting occurred at midnight Saturday at an adult venue called Club Q, which hosts drag queen performances.

The assailant, identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, began shooting at people as soon as he entered and was subdued by at least two of those present, one of whom was injured.
