President Jair Bolsonaro provisionally leads the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday in Brazil with 53.23% of the valid votes, compared to 46.77% of the progressive leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after having been scrutinized 5.61% of the total, according to the official data.
The progressive leader won the first round, on October 2, with 48.4% of the valid votes, but, as he did not obtain more than half of the votes, he had to face the far-right leader today in the ballot, who received 45.2%.
In the first round, Lula, indicated by the polls as the favorite to win today, remained in second place for much of the scrutiny and only went on to lead when the percentage of votes counted exceeded 70%.
The winner of this Sunday will assume the mandate on January 1 next.
