To participate in these primaries, the candidates had to demonstrate that they had the support of at least one hundred members of the conservative parliamentary group in the House of Commons (lower house). A few minutes before Brady’s announcement, the other candidate for this internal process, the leader of the Conservatives in the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, had announced on her Twitter account that she was withdrawing from these primaries and that she was giving her support. to Sunak.

With Mordaunt’s withdrawal, Sunak has automatically become the new Conservative leader, without the need for party members – some 160,000 – to vote. “These are unprecedented times. Despite the tight schedule for the leadership contest, it is clear colleagues feel we need certainty today,” Mordaunt said, referring to the clear endorsement Sunak had garnered among his fellow ranks.

Sunak, 42, had won the support of more than half of the Conservative MPs, but Mordaunt, according to the calculations of the British networks, only had 27 declared publicly.

King Carlos III will hold an audience with the new leader of the Conservative Party on Tuesday and will commission him to form a new government.

On Sunday, Boris Johnson -who resigned last July- confirmed that he did not aspire to the leadership of the Conservative Party because he considered that he could not govern with a very divided formation.

Sunak, of African parents of Indian descent, has worked in the past as an analyst for Goldman Sachs, among other investment funds, and has assured on several occasions that his objective is to put an end to the economic crisis in which the country. He is the richest British MP – even more than King Charles III – and campaigned in favor of leaving the European Union, considering that ‘Brexit’ would benefit a “freer, fairer and more prosperous” United Kingdom.

Support of his own and criticism of the opposition
