Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is from this Monday the new leader of the Conservative Party Y next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The announcement was made this afternoon by Graham Brady, president of the 1922 Committee, which brings together “Tory” deputies without portfolio.
Brady has announced in a chamber of Parliament that only one candidate, Rishi Sunak, had presented himself with the necessary nominations for the Conservative Party primaries, after the withdrawal of his rival Penny Mordaunt.
These internal elections were called after Liz Truss presented her resignation as Conservative leader and Prime Minister on the 20th following the controversy over her fiscal measures, with debt-financed tax cuts, which caused turbulence in the financial markets.
To participate in these primaries, the candidates had to demonstrate that they had the support of at least one hundred members of the conservative parliamentary group in the House of Commons (lower house). A few minutes before Brady’s announcement, the other candidate for this internal process, the leader of the Conservatives in the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, had announced on her Twitter account that she was withdrawing from these primaries and that she was giving her support. to Sunak.
With Mordaunt’s withdrawal, Sunak has automatically become the new Conservative leader, without the need for party members – some 160,000 – to vote. “These are unprecedented times. Despite the tight schedule for the leadership contest, it is clear colleagues feel we need certainty today,” Mordaunt said, referring to the clear endorsement Sunak had garnered among his fellow ranks.
Sunak, 42, had won the support of more than half of the Conservative MPs, but Mordaunt, according to the calculations of the British networks, only had 27 declared publicly.
King Carlos III will hold an audience with the new leader of the Conservative Party on Tuesday and will commission him to form a new government.
On Sunday, Boris Johnson -who resigned last July- confirmed that he did not aspire to the leadership of the Conservative Party because he considered that he could not govern with a very divided formation.
Sunak, of African parents of Indian descent, has worked in the past as an analyst for Goldman Sachs, among other investment funds, and has assured on several occasions that his objective is to put an end to the economic crisis in which the country. He is the richest British MP – even more than King Charles III – and campaigned in favor of leaving the European Union, considering that ‘Brexit’ would benefit a “freer, fairer and more prosperous” United Kingdom.
Support of his own and criticism of the opposition
Truss has congratulated Sunak and has transferred his support to the head of the Executive. Before her, also former Prime Minister david cameron has congratulated Sunak, who, he says, will have to lead the UK through “difficult times”.
The deputies of his party, after his speech behind closed doors, have received him with a noisy ovation. The journalists waiting outside have heard the traditional knocking on the tables, applause and cheers with which parliamentarians usually express support for their leader in this type of private meeting.
The number two of the Labor Party, angela raynerhas accused Sunak of “evading scrutiny” by having been chosen by his own colleagues without ever spelling out his priorities for the UK.
Rayner has once again called for early elections to be called. “The ‘tories’ have crowned Rishi Sunak as prime minister without him saying a single word about how he will lead the country and without anyone having the opportunity to vote“, he criticized.
Rayner also that “this is the same Rishi Sunak” who, as finance minister until last July, “failed to grow the economy or control inflation and failed to help families through the cost-of-living crisis caused by the Conservatives”.
