Between January and October of this year there have been 110 aggressions and attacks against press workers in the Caribbean country.
The Press and Society Institute (Ipys) of Venezuela denounced this Tuesday, in commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, that between January and October of this year there have been 110 aggressions and attacks against workers of the press of the Caribbean country.
The organization indicated, in a press release, that of the total of documented attacks, 64 were attacks with stigmatizing speeches, 11 arbitrary detentions and 3 forced disappearances.
“In Venezuela, impunity for crimes against journalists has also been imposed,” he said.
Likewise, Ipys explained that in 2020 they documented 338 aggressions and attacks against journalists and the media, among which 48 arbitrary detentions and 3 forced disappearances stood out.
“In addition, 18 press workers have been assassinated in the country since 2002. The most recent cases were those of José Carmelo Bislick Acosta, who was assassinated on August 18, 2020 in Sucre, and Andrés Eloy Nieves Zacarías, who lost the life on August 21 of that same year in Zulia, “he added.
Likewise, the organization maintained that the issue of providing security and protection to journalists in the performance of their duties has acquired increasing relevance in recent years.
“According to the Unesco Observatory of Murdered Journalists, more than 1,200 media workers lost their lives worldwide between 2006 and 2020. The instance adds that 9 out of 10 of these homicide cases continue unpunished,” he added.
On October 22, the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) approved the resolutions of its 77th General Assembly on Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, in which it condemned “the police and judicial persecution” and the “imprisonment” of reporters, as well as the “excessive attacks” against freedom of the press and expression in these countries.
The organization demanded that the Government of the Caribbean nation “respect the independent Venezuelan press” and “end the attacks and harassment” against the media and journalists. (I)
