New sanctions against Russia. Embargo on plastic, paper, tools and industrial machines

The Brussels correspondent of Polish Radio informed over the weekend what could be included in the sanctions package. The Commission’s proposals include imposing sanctions on imports from Russia and exports to this country worth several billion euros. Restrictions are to be imposed, inter alia, on steel, chemical, plastic, paper, tools and industrial machinery. The existing sanctions in the aviation sector are also to be supplemented with brake discs and tires.

Moreover, as Beata Płomecka, the Brussels correspondent of the Polish Radio, established, the persons responsible for organizing illegal referenda on joining Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine are to be blacklisted. They will be banned from entering the EU and their estates in Europe will be blocked.

The draft sanctions will also include a proposal for price ceilings for Russian oil, as agreed by the G7 group. In the case of the EU, which decided to launch an oil embargo from 5 December, this will mean changes in sanctions – a relaxation of the ban on insurance of ships carrying Russian oil and the imposition of a ban on transporting the raw material above the agreed price.

Russia wants to take lands from Ukraine, and MEPs want powerful sanctions against Moscow

In connection with the planned annexation to Russia of the territories occupied by Russian troops in the east and south of Ukraine, MEPs in a joint statement demanded sanctions against Russia. About 60 MEPs signed it, from several political groups, including ten from Poland.

MEPs’ demands include a full embargo on Russian energy resources, new trade sanctions, the exclusion of Russia from the G20 and other international organizations, and sanctions against those responsible for illegal referenda. The deputies stressed that the results of the referenda would not be considered a breach of international law and another illegal attempt to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

“These actions are Russia’s desperation in reaction to the poor military progress in Ukraine, where some of the territories occupied by the Russians have been liberated in recent weeks,” MEPs wrote.

Sanctions against Russia. Hungary is against it, it wants the sanctions to be lifted by the end of the year

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again called for the lifting of sanctions against Russia. Such a declaration was made during Orban’s speech inaugurating the autumn session of the Hungarian National Assembly.

The Hungarian government has been emphasizing for several weeks that it does not want new sanctions against Russia, and a few days ago Prime Minister Viktor Orban himself said that he wanted the sanctions lifted by the end of the year. On September 26, he confirmed his position in the Hungarian parliament. – The drastic increase in energy prices and inflation is caused by sanctions. This is not an economic problem, but a political one – and that is precisely what Brussels’ decisions are responsible for – he said.

Despite its doubts, so far Hungary has agreed to any sanction package. Now, in the intra-EU debate on the new package, Prime Minister Orban will want to use the argument that his people do not want them. He confirmed that the government would conduct national consultations in which Hungarians could comment on the subject. The consultation instrument has been used many times by the Hungarian government, as neither the result nor the turnout is binding on it.

The issue of policy towards Russia clearly separates Hungary from other European Union countries. Nevertheless, Viktor Orban said on Monday that Hungary still sees its future in the EU.
