Scientists Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger have been distinguished this Tuesday with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2022for their discoveries regarding the “power of quantum mechanics”as reported by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger, with their work, have paved the way for new technologies based on quantum information. The Karolinska Institute has indicated that they are pioneers in quantum information science, and that they have carried out “innovative experiments using entangled quantum states”.

The development of experimental tools by the winners has laid the foundations for “a new era of quantum technology. Being able to manipulate and manage quantum states and all their property layers gives us access to tools with unexpected potential.”

Alain Aspectborn in France, “has developed a configuration to close an important loophole. He was able to change the measurement configuration after an entangled pair had left its source, so the configuration that existed when they were broadcast could not affect the result.”

John F Clauser (United States) has built a device that emitted two entangled photons at the same time, each one towards a filter that tested its polarization. The result was a clear violation of a Bell inequality, and it was in agreement with the predictions of quantum mechanics.

Anton Zeilingerborn in Austria, has investigated entangled quantum states, and his research group “has demonstrated a phenomenon called quantum teleportation, which makes it possible to move a quantum state from one particle to another at a distance,” the Swedish academy has summarized.

The announcement of the Physics prize follows that of Medicine, awarded this Monday and which has gone to the Swedish Svante Pääbo for his studies on human evolution, and in the next few days those of Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economy will be announced.
