After the death of Isabel II at 96, his firstborn, Charles III73, has been formally proclaimed this Saturday new king of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth countries.

The proclamation took place in a ceremony that began at 10:00 a.m. (local) before the Access Council, an act that was held in the St James’s Palaceand which has been televised for the first time in history.

The hitherto Prince of Wales automatically ascended the throne on Thursday after the death of his mother, so the act of proclamation has been purely ceremonial. This has been the first official act of Carlos III as Head of State and is different from the coronationa ceremony with great pomp and pageantry expected to take place in the coming months.

After announcing the queen’s death and proclaiming her successor, the President of the Council, Penny Mordaunt, has asked the members of the Privy Council (political and social authorities who advise the monarch) to move to a separate room. This group of authorities, including the Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and the Prince of Wales, William, have met with the new king.

In a second part of the ceremony, Carlos II has made an intervention, where he has read and signed the oath to preserve the Church of Scotland.

As members of the Privy Council -inheritance from the past that is currently above all symbolic-, Camila, the queen consort, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, primate of the Anglican Church, have also been present.

Carlos III gave yesterday Friday his first official speech as king in which he said to renew the “promise of service throughout his life” that his mother, the late Elizabeth II, fulfilled in her 70-year reign. “I want to honor the memory of my mother,” she added. Today, he has once again reiterated that he will follow “the example” of Elizabeth II and that “he will work to follow the inspiring example that has been given to him when it comes to maintaining the constitutional government and seeking peace, harmony and prosperity for the peoples of these islands, Commonwealth realms and territories around the world”.
