The Chilean authorities have been investigating since Monday the appearance of a mysterious sinkhole 25 meters in diameter located in the north of the country, specifically in a mining area near Yellow Earth, Copiapo.
In the aerial images, we can see the enormity of the hole. The Chilean National Mining and Geology Service noticed this hole last Saturday, sending specialists to the area, as explained by the director, David Montenegro, in a statement.
“There is a considered distance of approximately 200 meters to the bottom,” he acknowledges, adding that they have not found any material in the depths of the hole, although they have a lot of water.
The nearest house is 600 meters and the nearest population center is more than One kilometer of the affected area. The National Mining and Geology Service has closed the entrance to the Alcaparrosa mine area.
