The inclusion of blue fuel and nuclear energy as transition fuels in a carbon shift paves the way for financing investments in these energy sources. Poland, which has long been saying that it is not able to quickly move from coal to energy from renewable sources, has made efforts to do so. The purpose of the adopted regulations on the so-called taxonomy is to redirect capital to greener investments, and therefore the “eco” labels attached to gas and nuclear are associated with EU funding.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, appealed for the adoption of the proposal several minutes before the vote. On Tuesday, Polish MEPs also argued for support during a debate at the plenary session of the parliament in Strasbourg.
The EU has “green” gas and nuclear power. MEPs on energy poverty
Law and Justice deputy Bogdan RzoĆca warned against the rejection of this proposal and the high social costs of the energy transformation and energy poverty. “Rejection will make the poorer poorer,” he commented
Jerzy Buzek, MEP of the Civic Platform, pointed out, inter alia, that Ukraine, dependent on these energy sources, called for the inclusion of gas and nuclear in the taxonomy. The authorities in Kiev argued that it is important for Ukraine, as a candidate to the EU, that they are temporarily included in the taxonomy. “Such gas investments will have to switch to hydrogen or green gas by 2035, and countries must set a date to abandon coal, these are good proposals” – he said
In the afternoon session, MPs are to discuss how to facilitate the removal of millions of tons of grain from Ukrainian ports.
