iPhones will start to react to road accidents

Apple smartphones will begin to respond to traffic accidents and automatically call emergency services. Reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Journalists of the publication got access to an internal study of Apple and found out the company’s plans for the future. The corporation is testing the accident detection function on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Apparently, the smartphone and smartwatch will collect data from built-in sensors and determine that the owner of the device is involved in a traffic accident. The main markers of an accident will be high speed, strong impact and fall.

If the gadget suspects the fact of an accident, the device will notify the user about this, start a countdown and, if the owner of the device does not respond, will call emergency services. Thanks to the function that has appeared, the iPhone or Apple Watch will automatically transmit data about the place where the incident occurred and information about the user to the police, rescue services and doctors. The option may appear in Apple devices in 2022.

Apple tested this feature in 2020 by collecting anonymized user data. Using built-in sensors and algorithms, the brand’s devices identified 10 million possible accidents, of which 50 thousand included calls to emergency services using 911.

Apple Watch has an option with which the watch can determine that its owner has fallen. The device can automatically notify emergency services and report the user’s location.
