Alexa will be able to imitate the voice of deceased relatives: “Can Grandma read me a book?”

Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, will have an experimental function that will allow, thanks to artificial intelligence, imitate the voice of a person, even if he is deceased. The announcement has been made during the MARS conference, in which we see a boy asking his assistant to his grandmother read him the end of the Wizard of Oz.

“Instead of Alexa’s voice, It is the voice of his grandmother that reads him the book“, explains Rohit Prasad, chief scientist of Alexa’s artificial intelligence. The reason for this functionality, explains Prasad, is to provide artificial intelligence with “human attributes” at a time when, due to the pandemic, people they have “lost someone dear”.

“Artificial intelligence can’t take away the pain of a loss, but it definitely can. can make memories last“, he says. To carry out this process, the Amazon assistant needs less than a minute of audio from that person, which it processes using artificial intelligence to see the result that occurs in the video (from minute 1: 01:59).

From Amazon they do not clarify when it will introduce this functionality or if it will finally integrate it into its virtual assistant. “We are living in the golden age of artificial intelligencewhere our dreams and science fiction are becoming reality,” praises Prasad.
