Passwords shorter than eight characters can be cracked in an hour

Passwords with less than twelve characters can be hacked instantly if they only contain numbers, or if they are only made up of lowercase letters. On the other hand, those that have twelve characters combining uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols would need 3,000 years to find out.

hackers can crack eight-character passwords in less than an hour, while those with twelve combining uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols could take 3,000 years to find out. This is what Jordi Serra, computer science professor at the University of Catalonia, warns on the occasion of the International Password Day that is celebrated this Monday.

A recent study by the cyber security company Hive Systems states that passwords with less than twelve characters can be hacked instantly if they only contain numbers, or if they are only made up of lowercase letters.

According to Professor Serra, the recommended extension to have passwords sufficiently protected is from ten characters. However, he explains that if the password is created from words that are in the dictionary, the length of the password is not very relevant. There are tools that test combinations of known words by also adding dates, and create combinations of letters and numbers. Therefore, the more letters it has, the more possible combinations must be tried until the correct password is found.

The annual NordPass study shows that The most frequent combination of numbers in the Spanish State is 12345, followed by 123456 and 123456789. According to this same study, “Barcelona” is in position 10, “Alejandro” is in position 16, and “I love you” in position 18. The study also reveals that using the name of the preferred football team is also not a good option, since in some places it appears in the fifth position.

Among the most used passwords worldwide, the first row of letters on the computer keyboard, “qwerty”, ranks fourth. The next position on the list is occupied by “password”the word password in English.

The teacher recommends using more than one method of identification of the three currently existing. For example, use the unique code to the mobile next to the password.
