Apple suspected of abusing market dominance

The European Commission has given Apple its preliminary opinion on the company’s status in the mobile wallet market. This was reported in a press release published on the website of the organization.

The statement says that the European Commission has formed a preliminary opinion that Apple may have abused its dominant market position in the field of mobile wallets. Thus, the American company was suspected that it could restrict access to its technologies to other players in the e-commerce market.

“We found signs that Apple has restricted third-party access to key technologies needed to develop competing mobile wallet solutions on Apple devices,” said European Commission Digital Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.

Apple Pay is a proprietary payment system available on iOS and other Apple operating systems. It is clarified that Apple Pay is the only solution that can work on devices of the American brand. The statement said that in this way Apple could limit competition in the market and consumer choice.

At the end of April, members of the European Parliament approved USB-C as a single connector for phones and tablets sold in Europe. According to experts, this decision may most affect Apple, which adheres to the Lightning connector in its smartphones.
