What seems like a step backwards is the beginning of having more environmentally friendly phones. Therefore, the European Parliament wants them to come back removable batteries of the devices. So that the user himself can change the battery without having to have a professional.
Now extracting it is so complicated that everything that has to do with it is considered a repair, which also involves the 42% of breakdowns and a cost of around 190 euros. “It is just as expensive to repair it as a mobile,” says a user who repeats this recurring thought among many people.
However, the European Parliament wants oblige manufacturers to make them removable. The objective is recycle 80% of batteries by 2030. In addition, it represents a saving of 74 million devices, 20,000 million euros and 1.5 million tons of CO₂which is what pollutes a million cars a year.
The manufacturers do not agree and see some drawbacks such as the fact that today’s mobiles are more hermetic and therefore more protected against liquids. They are also more difficult to steal thanks to the battery.
