Samsung to install ‘dangerous’ batteries in foldable smartphones

The Elec: Samsung will save on the production of foldable smartphones thanks to batteries

Samsung turned to a Chinese battery maker to save money on foldable devices. This is reported by The Elec.

Sources have learned that Samsung will agree with the Chinese company Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) to supply batteries for foldable smartphones. The Korean company broke off contact with ATL in 2017 after the Galaxy Note 7 scandal. Then the devices were removed from sale due to the risk of fire devices, Samsung accused the partner of supplying low-quality batteries.

SamMobile journalists called the ATL supplier “catastrophic” and noted that in the worst case scenario, the Chinese manufacturer’s batteries installed in folding devices could be dangerous. Despite the fact that Samsung stopped buying batteries from ATL for its flagship devices, the company continued to equip budget phones of the Galaxy A and M series with batteries from an Asian partner. The authors believe that thanks to ATL, Samsung will save on the production of folding devices.

According to The Elec analysts, the cost of the battery is about five percent of the cost of manufacturing a smartphone. It is expected that in 2022, the Korean corporation may introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphones.

Earlier sources told The Elec that Samsung will start producing budget phones with Chinese companies Wingtech and Huaqin. Thus, the corporation will be able to save on the production of budget devices.
