Huawei decided to fight sanctions with the help of research

Bloomberg: Huawei has invested $ 22 billion in new research amid sanctions

Huawei has significantly increased the cost of developing and researching new technologies. It is reported by Bloomberg.

According to the agency’s analysts, in 2021, the Chinese corporation invested more than $22.1 billion in research and development (R&D) segment. Experts said that Huawei has doubled this figure over the past half century and has invested more in the R&D sector than any company outside the United States.

Research spending in 2021 accounted for 22.4 percent of Huawei’s revenue. That’s almost twice as much as a percentage of revenue than Amazon and Alphabet, and more than three times as much as Apple. Experts noted that in this way Huawei decided to fight the sanctions imposed against it by the United States in 2019. The company is reducing dependence on American technology.

Journalists noted that this approach is bearing fruit: in 2021, the company registered 2,770 patents in the United States, ranking fifth in the world in this indicator. Huawei said in a report last year that 107,000 employees — or 55 percent of the total — are engaged in R&D. By comparison, Microsoft employs 60,000 people in R&D, about a third of the company’s employees.

At the end of March, Huawei representatives said that in order to survive under the sanctions, the company needs to increase strategic investments. Corporate executives also noted that Huawei is currently undergoing a new stage of industrial reconstruction.
