Members of the European Parliament have chosen USB-C as a single connector for all smartphones sold
Members of the European Parliament approved USB-C as the only connector for smartphones and tablets sold in Europe. It is reported by the publication ZDNet.
Members of the European Parliament in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection voted in favor of a proposal to switch to a single format for all smartphones. The voting ended with 43 votes in favor and two against. A proposal to move to a common standard for gadgets was made on September 23, 2021.

A statement on the European Parliament’s website says that choosing USB-C as a single connector for smartphones will reduce the number of charging accessories sold and will have a positive impact on the environment. EU legislators have also proposed that devices be clearly labeled to indicate whether a charger is included with a smartphone or tablet.
In addition to phones, the new rules are going to extend to tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, game consoles and portable speakers, if they can be charged with a wired cable. It was also decided to install a common connector in laptops.
According to ZDNet journalists, this decision may most affect Apple, which sticks to the Lightning connector in its smartphones and does not bundle iPhone with chargers. The transition to the new standard may take several years.
At the end of April, well-known insider LeaksApplePro explained why Apple is in no hurry to release smartphones with a USB-C connector. According to him, the IT giant receives a lot of money from royalties from any manufacturer that produces Lightning accessories, and does not want to give up an additional source of income.
