Facebook has lost interest in the industry podcasting just one year after launching initiatives such as the live audio rooms (Live Audio Rooms) to follow the trend set by Clubhouse, to focus on other projects such as the metaverse.
Facebook parent Meta is looking to focus its efforts on the metaverse and its short-form video projects in the face of ever-increasing competition and after the sharp drop in its shares on the stock marketas reported by Ashley Carman in Bloomberg citing sources close to the matter.
Facebook is thus working on other initiatives together with its partners in the podcastingsuch as events in the metaverse and purchases on-linewhich cannot be detailed because said plans are not public at the moment.
A spokesman for the company has assured the American media that work continues in the podcast business and a good reception of your products in audio formatalthough work is being accelerated on higher priority features such as Reels and Feed.
Facebook’s change of direction can also be seen on LinkedIn, where one of the company’s Podcast Product Directors, Irena Lam, has changed her role to one more oriented to “boost musical experiences on Facebook and Instagram”, as she describes herself.
Bloomberg points out that Facebook’s less interest in podcasting may be a disappointment for those who saw a large potential audience on the platform and, with it, more advertising revenue.
The media outlet gives the example of the American political commentary program TYT Network, which claims to have its second largest listening platform, behind only Apple Podcasts. Since its debut in September 2021, its director of Marketing, Praveen Singh, claims to have received “hundreds of thousands of additional monthly views”, twice as many as on Spotify.
In April of last year, Facebook presented a new function to listen to podcasts directly in its application and live audio rooms, its version of the voice social network Club House, with which to attend audio-only conversations. Both novelties were accompanied by tools for audio editing, and formats such as ‘soundbites’, short audio clips. (I)
