Smartphone shipments collapsed

Canalys: Global smartphone shipments fell 11 percent in the first quarter of 2022

Global smartphone shipments have collapsed amid unfavorable global conditions. This was reported on the website of the agency Canalys.

According to the study, growth in the smartphone market was held back by several factors: the alarming situation in the world, the economic crisis, another outbreak of COVID-19 in China. In this regard, shipments of devices in the first quarter of 2022 fell by 11 percent compared to the same period in 2021. Also, at the beginning of the year, the demand for phones is traditionally not very high.

“Suppliers must prepare to respond quickly to emerging opportunities and risks without detracting from their long-term strategic plans,” said Canalys Vice President Nicole Peng. The good news for gadget makers, she says, is that component shortages may soon change for the better.

Despite the uncertainty in global markets, leading smartphone vendors have strengthened their positions. Samsung remained the segment leader with a 24 percent share – in the first quarter of 2021, the company’s share was 22 percent. In second place was Apple, which increased its share by 3 percent with an indicator of 18 percent. Closes the top 3 Xiaomi, whose share for the year decreased by 1 percent to 13 percent.

In mid-February, Canalys analysts said that 8.9 million foldable smartphones were sold in 2021. Deliveries year on year growth was 148 percent.
