Epic Games receives 2,000 million from Sony and Lego to boost the metaverse

The American video game developer Epic Games announced on Monday that it has received 2,000 million dollars from the Japanese multinational Sony and the Danish company Kirkbi, owner of Lego, in an investment round to boost the metaverse.

In a statement, Epic Games, one of the main companies involved in the emerging business of the metaverse thanks to its popular video game “Fortnite”, estimated that with this new injection of money its value in the private sphere amounts to 31,500 million dollars.

The video game company is not listed on the stock market and is not required to present its accounts to the public, but it is known as a result of its lawsuit against Apple that in 2020 it had a gross turnover of 5.1 billion dollars.

The company’s chief executive, Tim Sweeney, stressed today that the investment will “accelerate” the construction of the metaverse with spaces “where gamers can have fun with their friends”, brands develop immersive experiences and creators “thrive”.

Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida said he is interested in developing sports-related digital experiences, while Kirkbi CEO Søren Thorup Sørensen said he is investing in future trends for the world children will live in.

Last week, Lego, which has a line of video games, announced a collaboration with Epic to develop a kid-friendly metaverse, with their “well-being” and “privacy” at the forefront.

The metaverse is a digital universe made up of an amalgamation of social networks, interconnected internet games, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality and cryptocurrencies, and although its adoption largely depends on society, the business world has already seen a gold mine .

Among technology companies, Facebook changed its name to Meta in allusion to the metaverse and Microsoft bought video game developer Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion, while several retailers have registered trademarks related to the sale of digital assets. (I)
