What happened to MySpace and Hi5, the social networks that could dominate the world and failed

Social networks have invaded daily life in much of society. Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, among others, are commonly used among young people and adults. But before these platforms were so popular, there were others like my space Y Hi5which are almost forgotten.

artist platform

MySpace, whose headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California, was founded in August 2003 by Chris De Wolfe and Tom Anderson, a year before Facebook. It emerged with the purpose of replacing personal web pages offering a profile of each user with their photos, videos or favorite music.

It soon became a platform that helped many artists lay the foundation for their successful career. My Chemical Romance, Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris or Adele were some of these cases.

In 2005, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation paid $580 million to buy the site’s parent companywhich until 2008 was the most popular social network in the world.

The portal became the most visited website in the United States, surpassing even the giant Google. But in April 2008, Facebook began to take the lead. Between that year and 2011, MySpace lost more than 40 million unique visitors per month.

By June 2011 News Corp agreed to sell Myspace for $35 million to the online advertising company Specific Media. In 2009, the platform employed approximately 1,600 people, but ten years later it had a staff of just 150.

In 2019 the portal announced that due to technical problems due to a server migration error, it had suffered the loss of the entire music content repository from 2003 to 2015which would amount to about 50 million songs.

Facebook currently reigns supreme on the social side, while YouTube and Spotify they monopolize the musical side. This made Myspace _whose current owner is Time Inc_ light years away from the lead, although still running. Due to its different owners it has had numerous redesigns and relaunches.

Hi5 was created by Ramu Yalamanchi and had a lot of popularity especially among young people in Latin America. Many couples met through this network.

It was launched in 2003 and through profiles, users could post your profile picture and interests, plus invite your friends. It also allowed you to customize your profiles with backgrounds, colors and videos.

At its height, it had more than 70 million active users, but due to the growth of Facebook and other networks, Hi5 was losing relevance.

At the beginning of 2010, the social network began to change its strategy and inclined towards social games and the development of these. The following year the company was acquired by its rival Tagget. (I)
