‘What is the fault of the French fries?’, part of Kaspersky’s response to complaints from the German Government

What do potato chips have to do with a story about a computer security company? Everything and nothing. This is the analogy used by Claudio Martinelli, general manager for Latin America at Kaspersky, when referring to the statement made by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) when it recommended avoiding the use of the Russian company’s antivirus and using alternative products against the considerable risk of a computer cyber attack by the Russian authorities.

And it is that Martinelli affirms that this situation responds to a warlike context that has nothing to do with the activity of the company. “This is more or less like when about five years ago the United States had differences with the French government: throughout the country they stopped telling them french fries to the fries. What’s wrong with the fries? Here it is something similar: the differences between governments have nothing to do with the activities of our company”.

The representative of the computer security company explains that the only relationship it has with the Russian government is as a service provider, but that they are an independent company; and that even their servers are not in Russia, but in Zurich.

In its statement, the BSI assured that “a Russian information technology manufacturer can carry out offensive operations by itself, be forced, against its will, to attack target systems, be spied on without its knowledge as a victim of a cyber operation or be misused as a tool for attacks against its own customers.” According to Martinelli, all these statements are not based on any technical criteria and rather respond to subjective conclusions.

“Kaspersky’s operations remain stable and our technology and operational processes are strong and resilient. Our job is to protect our customers in any country from cyber threats, and this geopolitical situation is no exception,” the company said in an official statement.

The damages caused by this publication are those related to the lack of confidence on the part of the clients, more than the economic ones, as the company representatives comment. “Many of our competitors have taken advantage of this situation to convince customers to switch with them, because they could not do otherwise,” concludes Martinelli, and states that they do not rule out requesting more rectifications from this institution.
