German Cybersecurity Authority Recommends Avoiding Russian Kaspersky Antivirus

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommended this Tuesday avoid using the antivirus from the Russian company Kaspersky and use alternative products due to the considerable risk of a computer cyber attack by the Russian authorities.

“The conduct of the Russian military and/or intelligence forces, as well as the threats expressed by the Russian side in the course of the current war against the EU, NATO and Germany are associated with a considerable risk of a successful computer attack”, warns the BSI in a statement.

A Russian IT manufacturer “may itself carry out offensive operations, be forced against its will to attack target systems, be spied upon without its knowledge as a victim of a cyber operation, or be misused as a tool for attacks against their own clients,” he argues.

Users themselves may be affected by these operations, adds the BSI, which stresses that above all companies and authorities with special security interests, as well as critical infrastructure operators they may be threatened.

The German Cybersecurity Authority recommends that companies and other organizations carefully plan and carry out the replacement of essential elements of their IT security infrastructure.

Disconnect without any preparation computer security products and in particular antivirus programs would imply the possible exposure without any protection to attacks from the Internet, warns the BSI.

Switching to other products is associated with a temporary loss of comfort, functionality and security, acknowledges the cybersecurity authority, which recommends making an individual assessment and weighing the current situation and, if necessary, be advised by computer security service providers BSI certified.

The German cybersecurity authority, for its part, offers advice to those affected, who can also ask other competent authorities for assistance. (I)
