In a statement, the platform owner, ByteDance, said it was a “creativity and entertainment platform” that “can help build interpersonal relationships even over time.” However, the decision to disable most of TikTok’s functions was made for the safety of the company’s employees and website users. The Chinese company has not announced when and whether it will restore the suspended services.

TikTok’s decision is related to the law signed on Friday, which punishes “false information” about the war with up to 15 years imprisonment. Fearing the consequences, some independent editorial offices have limited or suspended their activities, explaining that journalists want to inform either in accordance with professional ethics or not at all.

The editorial office of TV-2 from Tomsk has suspended its activities, which was announced by its editor-in-chief Wiktor Mucznik. The websites of the Russian-speaking BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio Svoboda and Meduza were blocked. At the request of the prosecutor’s office, the Moscow Echo was blocked – a Russian radio belonging to Gazprom but operating independently. Facebook and Twitter are also not working.
