The people of Tonga have reconnected with the world. The volcanic eruption cut them off from the global network

As a result of the volcanic explosion on the Tonga Islands, for several weeks, mthe inhabitants of the archipelago did not have internet connectivity. The disruption of the submarine optical fiber has completely cut off from the global network. Communication on the island was finally restored five weeks after the disaster.

Tonga. Five weeks without internet

Already a week after the volcanic explosion, it was possible to launch Internet access in some places, but with low bandwidth. However, there was still no fast and efficient connection to the network. 840 km of underwater optical fiber was the only source of reliable internet for the people of Tonga.

On Tuesday, February 22, the island’s telecommunications service providers Digicel and TCC have confirmed that the internet has been restored – informed the BBC service.

Glad we’re back online. It was a serious task given the scale of the damage

– Prime Minister Tonga Hu’akavemeiliku Siaosi Sovaleni told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
