Than Dudley, who entered Poland at night from Wednesday to Thursday, brought a bad weather. However, the night from Thursday to Friday was already very difficult in many regions of the country. The problem was the particularly gusty wind that knocked over trees and even ripped off the roofs of buildings.
“We probably had to deal with at least a few fairly powerful whirlwinds. The preliminary assessment of the damage indicates at least the F2 intensity category in the Fujita scale. This means that the damage caused by these phenomena is very large and rarely observed in our country “- Polskie Łowcy Burz wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
How to find out where the gale is going to be? Here are some good places
Unfortunately, this is not the end. Most likely also on the night from Friday to Saturday in some parts of the country will be equally windy. Poland will be within the range of the Eunice low, which will bring storms and heavy rainfall.
“Today and tomorrow (18/19/02) strong wind. Possible power cuts and difficult road conditions. Stay home if you can” – we read in the RCB alert, which was sent to the inhabitants of Poland. Exactly, where (apart from RCB alerts) to look for information about strong winds? We’ve gathered some of the best places on the web to research the extent of storms or see if there’s a storm at night.
Windy.com
One of the best and at the same time probably the most famous address is windy.com. It is a Czech weather portal operating since 2014, which is based, among others, on on accurate data from the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts.
The first thing that catches your eye after entering the website is a good-quality, transparent weather map. By default, colors are used to mark warmer and colder regions of the world, and animations constantly show the current wind direction. The air temperature in a given region is also marked with the names of larger cities. We can see the exact weather forecast for a selected place by clicking or searching for its name.
Windy.com even allows you to view the recordings of the last 24 hours captured by publicly available city cameras. This additionally allows you to assess what conditions prevail and recently prevailed in the center of a given city.
There are also tabs at the user’s disposal showing, among others, current and forecast cloud cover around the world, the extent of rain and snow, a storm map, and even the height of waves on seas and oceans or (more useful from the perspective of Polish citizens) a tool showing air pollution on a map. Windy.com supports the Polish language and is available online for free.
Where else to check the weather forecast?
Windy.com is not the only place on the web where we can check the extent of storms. Among the others, it is worth mentioning:
- Windfinder – an application for smartphones (but also available from the browser level on computers) that allows you to check, among others wind direction, intensity and speed currently and 10 days in advance.
- Burzowo.info – a website (and smartphone app) that displays a dynamic map of lightning strikes across Europe
- Storm Monitor – allows you to track the appearing storms on the map and the direction in which they are moving.
- Storm helper – aggregator collecting weather alerts from various sources. The program allows you to track emerging storms on the map of Europe and predict where they will appear in the near future.
- Regional Warning System – an application for smartphones created by the Ministry of Interior and Administration, showing alerts regarding dangerous weather phenomena (storms, storms, hail, flood risk, etc.). The app contains a map with the locations of dangerous phenomena marked.
- Radaryonline.pl – aggregator of various weather radars available on the network. We will find here, among others wind radar, storms, precipitation, clouds and even ships and planes.
In addition, it is worth following the profiles of Polish Storm Hunters and the Storm Observer Network on Facebook, where messages warning against extreme weather phenomena throughout Poland appear on a regular basis. Many posts are additionally decorated with clear maps showing the territorial range of strong winds, downpours or lightning strikes. Alerts against dangerous phenomena also often appear in the Google Maps application.
