The company has been testing the system since 2020, and has made hundreds of drone deliveries in experimental operations, which it will now offer commercially.

The Brazilian home delivery company iFood, which operates in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, It will be the first in all of America to use drones in its operations, the leading operator in the sector in Latin America announced on Saturday.

The startup born in 2011 and currently controlled by Movile highlighted in a statement the authorization it received this week from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) of Brazil to use remotely piloted aircraft in product deliveries.

The license, despite the fact that it extends to all of Brazil and enables it to operate in urban areas, for now it only allows you to deliver loads of up to 2.5 kilos over distances of up to 3 kilometers.

“This authorization for commercial daily use is unprecedented in the market and on the continent,” iFood said in its statement, which clarified that it will carry out drone operations in partnership with the company Speedbird Aero, which has experienced aircraft operators.

“It is a unique conquest for Brazil and a historical milestone in aviation, but also in the development of society. It is about the beginning of a transformation that will speed up deliveries with the use of an air modal in part of the routes, ”said the head of Logistics and Innovation of iFood, Fernando Martins, quoted in the statement.

The executive explained that the drones will be used only on one part of the route, between the restaurant and a center equipped with a specific and safe area for the landing and take-off of the devices, from where a delivery person will complete the transport to the clients residence.

He added that the company has been testing the system since 2020, and has made hundreds of drone deliveries in experimental operations, which it will now be able to offer commercially. The system was also tested for parcel transport between two cities separated by a river.

iFood, one of the largest Brazilian technology and foodtech companies and makes about 60 million deliveries per month in 1,200 cities, in which it has 270,000 associated commercial establishments, including restaurants and supermarkets, and 200,000 homes registered on its platform. (I)
