Known as the ‘secret omicron‘, BA.2 It is the subvariant that already circulates in dozens of countries and that accumulates more than 20 mutations different from the main variant, as the virologist Estanislao Nistal Villán tells in the video.
Denmark is the main focus of this subvariant, with almost 45% of their cases detected belonging to BA.2. It would be an even more transmissible omicron, but not more violent.
“Is a competition for the market between two viruses, so to speak. We are the market and as our immunity learns how one works, the other takes the niche,” explains Nistal Villán.
In Israel, on January 14 they already registered 20 cases of this variant. After three days, when they thought they had passed their peak of infections, there was a new rebound that has not stopped even with the fourth dose.
Another peculiarity of this subvariant is that it can be detected by PCR, but not differentiated from other variants, that’s where the ‘stealth’ comes from. It is expected to become the dominant variant coming soon.
In Spain no cases have yet been detected, Meanwhile in United Kingdom have already located more than 400 cases. The vaccine, despite not preventing contagion by omicron, does allow the symptom picture to not be serious as a general rule.
