Apple to finally ditch free headphones for iPhone

Apple will stop selling its smartphones with bundled headphones in France starting at the end of January. This is reported by the French-language edition of Consomac.

Representatives of one of the retail chains in France announced the decision of the American company. The statement said that from January 24, Apple smartphones sold will ship without a free wired headset. This is due to changes in French law.

So far, France is the only country for which Apple has to sell the iPhone along with the headphones. In 2020, the company finally stopped putting an adapter and a headset in the box with smartphones. French law required that smartphones sold in the country be bundled with headphones that could reduce radio frequency emissions from the gadget.

The report clarifies that the French authorities have adopted a new law, according to which the distribution of a free headset along with devices can harm the environment. Along with Apple, Xiaomi will also refuse free headphones.

Apple has repeatedly tried to punish for the lack of accessories in the new iPhone. So, in March 2021, the Brazilian Consumer Protection Authority of São Paulo (Procon-SP) fined the company 10.5 million reais (almost $1.9 million) for selling smartphones without chargers.
