The song about the adventures of a family of lovable sharks was written in 2015, but its popularity only exploded a year later, when it appeared on the Pinkfong channel on YouTube along with the animated music video.
Since then, “Baby Shark” has started its triumphant march, breaking new records for the platform. Already in November 2020, the song became the most popular video on the website belonging to Google, leaving behind, among others, the famous “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi.
For a family hungry for success, however, it was just the beginning. And so in January 2021, the song that was originally performed by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine became the first video on YouTube. breaking the magic barrier of 10 billion views.
It is hard to imagine that anyone would be able to bring the results closer to this in the near future. For comparison, the already mentioned “Despacito” on YouTube was watched “only” 7.7 billion times.
“Baby Shark” broke the YouTube record
Baby Shark is not only a song today, but a cultural phenomenon. The popularity of the song made the famous children’s TV channel Nickeldeon release a whole series of animations about the adventures of the shark family. A full-length film is already planned. Baby Shark has also appeared in the Just Dance 2020 music video game, with one company even offering NFT shark tokens.
The famous song also has a dark side to it. And it’s not just that it is the bane of parents, grandparents and guardians who dream at night. In October 2020, the New York Times reported that three Oklahoma prison workers were charged with punishing prisoners by forcing them to listen to Baby Shark for two hours non-stop.
